TRANSMITTAL INFORMATION |
REVISION 1 TO SERVICE BULLETIN 72-0015 |
Revision 1 is issued to update paragraphs 1., PLANNING INFORMATION, 2., MATERIAL INFORMATION, and 3., ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS. |
The original was issued August 26, 2011. Revision bars in the left margin identify changes. |
1. | PLANNING INFORMATION |
A. | Effectivity |
|
This Service Bulletin has been introduced in production to these GEnx-1B engines: |
• |
|
These serial numbers are the best available data. |
The old aft support ring P/N 2300M98G02 is affected by this Service Bulletin. |
B. | Description |
This Service Bulletin releases a new aft support ring P/N 2444M11G01. This Service Bulletin also provides instructions to replace the old aft support ring. |
C. | Compliance |
Category 7 |
GE recommends that you do this Service Bulletin at customer's convenience or option. |
NOTE: |
|
D. | Concurrent Requirements |
None. |
E. | Reason |
(1) | Objective: |
To reduce cost of ownership. |
(2) | Condition: |
Old aft support ring is a one piece design. |
(3) | Cause: |
The new design reduces hardware replacement because only the damaged part is replaced. The inner support material was changed to help reduce material weight caused by the two piece design. The two piece design also reduces complexity and size of forging, thus it improves manufacturing capability. |
(4) | Improvement: |
The proposed design is a single part number, spinner assembly aft support made of two rings. Outer ring is a Ti-6-4 ring with a flow path geometrically identical to the current material and design, while the inner ring is 7075 material. The rings are pre-assembled by non-structural fasteners to help the engine assembly and also to keep a single PPN. |
(5) | Substantiation: |
Substantiation is by analysis and comparative analysis. |
F. | Approval |
This Service Bulletin has been reviewed by the FAA and the repair(s) and modification(s) herein comply with the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and are FAA APPROVED for installation in the model(s) listed in this Service Bulletin. |
G. | Manpower |
No additional man-hours are required to comply with this Service Bulletin. |
H. | Weight and Balance |
The complete compliance with this Service Bulletin increases weight by 0.20 lb (0.09 kg). |

3. | ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS |
A. | Removal of the aft support ring |
(1) | Removal instructions for the aft support ring (1, Figure 1) have not changed. Refer to the GEnx-1B EM, 72-00-01, DISASSEMBLY 001. |
B. | Assemble of the aft support ring |
NOTE: |
|
(1) | Assemble the outer ring (3) and inner ring (2) as follows: |
(a) | Measure dimension K in six equally spaced locations. Calculate the average and put it in the record sheet (Figure 1). |
(b) | Measure dimension L in six equally spaced locations. Calculate the average and put it in the record sheet (Figure 1). |
WARNING: |
|
(c) | Align the holes of the outer ring (3) with the offset holes of the inner ring (2). If necessary the inner ring can be heated to a maximum of 300F (148C). |
(2) | Install the screws (4) and nuts (5). |
(3) | Torque the nuts in a criss-cross pattern to 15 lb in. (1.7 N.m) more than the running torque. Do not torque more than 40 lb in. (4.5 N.m). |
(4) | Measure dimension M in six equally spaced locations. Calculate the average and put it in the record sheet (Figure 1). |
(5) | Sum of dimensions K and L must be equal to dimension M with plus or minus 0.00400 in (0.1016 mm) of tolerance. |
(6) | Make sure that the head of the screw (4) is flush or below surface U. |
C. | Installation of the aft support ring |
(1) | Installation instructions for the assembled aft support ring (1) have not changed. Refer to the GEnx-1B EM, 72-00-01, ASSEMBLY 001. |
