SB 72-0036 R00 ENGINE - Propulsor Module Assembly (72-00-00) - Introduction of New HPT Stage 2 Nozzles and Spline Seals | Issued: 08/18/2011 | |
1. | PLANNING INFORMATION |
A. | Effectivity |
|
This Service Bulletin has been introduced in production to these GEnx-1B engines: |
• |
|
These serial numbers are the best available data. |
The high pressure turbine (HPT) stage 2 nozzle P/N 2305M56G05, HPT stage 2 nozzles P/N 2300M61G03, P/N 2300M61G04, HPT stage 2 nozzle spline seals P/N 2300M64P01, P/N 2300M64P03, P/N 2300M64P05, P/N 2300M64P06, and P/N 2300M64P07 are affected by this Service Bulletin. |
B. | Description |
This Service Bulletin releases the new HPT stage 2 nozzle P/N 2305M56G06, and improved HPT stage 2 nozzles P/N 2300M61G07, P/N 2300M61G08, HPT stage 2 nozzle spline seals P/N 2300M64P08, P/N 2300M64P09, P/N 2300M64P10, P/N 2300M64P11, P/N 2300M64P12. The HPT stage 2 nozzles are being released to improve spline seal slot configuration and nozzle thermal barrier coating (TBC). |
C. | Compliance |
Category 6 |
GE recommends that you do this Service Bulletin when the HPT stage 2 nozzles are routed for repair. |
NOTE: |
|
This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability or performance of your GE product, or to help prevent the occurrence of the event or condition described in this Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate in the bulletin, that decision will be taken into consideration by GE in evaluating future product performance issues that may arise in the operators fleet. |
D. | Concurrent Requirements |
None. |
E. | Reason |
(1) | Objective: |
To introduce new parts, improve reliability, and reduce cost of ownership. |
(2) | Condition: |
Breakout of parts have been observed on HPT stage 2 nozzle spline seals on some of the GEnx development engines. The new HPT stage 2 nozzle TBC provides unnecessary environmental protection. |
(3) | Cause: |
Seal slot breakout resulting from the manufacturing process. Enhanced environmental protection not required to meet maintenance specification. |
(4) | Improvement: |
The new seal configuration adjusts HPT stage 2 nozzle spline seal locations and sizes to provide more metal between the slot and the flowpath. |
The coating change from platinum aluminide to a simple aluminide for the HPT stage 2 nozzle provides optimal nozzle protection. |
Depending on engine operating characteristics and configuration, this Service Bulletin can improve specific fuel consumption (SFC). This design change leads to 0.006 percent SFC increase due to increased leakage around the nozzle bands. |
(5) | Substantiation: |
Substantiation is by comparative analysis. |
F. | Approval |
This Service Bulletin contains no modification information that revises the approved configuration and therefore does not require FAA approval. |
G. | Manpower |
No additional man-hours are required to comply with this Service Bulletin. |
H. | Weight and Balance |
Weight and balance are not changed. |
