This Service Bulletin has been introduced in production to these GEnx-1B54, GEnx-1B58, GEnx-1B64, GEnx-1B67, and GEnx-1B70 engines:
GEnx-1B engines, serial numbers 956-124, 956-125 and 956-140 and up.
These serial numbers are the best available data.
B.Description
This Service Bulletin releases a new HPC Stage 3-4 Spool P/N 2439M37G01 and a new HPC Stage 6-10 Spool P/N 2439M35G01 onto the GEnx-1B engine.

NOTE:
This Service Bulletin can be accomplished in shop.
The life limits for the new HPC Stage 3-4 Spool P/N 2439M37G01 and the new HPC Stage 6-10 Spool P/N 2439M35G01 have been added to the GEnx-1B Engine Manual, Section 05-11-02 by Temporary Revision 05-0005. Refer to the GEnx-1B Engine Manual for the life limits of these parts.

E.Reason
(1)Objective:
To introduce a new HPC Stage 3-4 Spool P/N 2439M37G01 and a new HPC Stage 6-10 Spool P/N 2439M35G01.
(2)Condition:
The current spool designs have features that need improvement in LCF and thermal growth capability to support higher thrust applications.
The Stage 6-10 spool also has an aft flange with a complicated scallop design which adds complexity to the manufacturing process.
(3)Cause:
Development engine testing of the current design spools showed that additional thermal growth capability of the stage 3-4 spool spacer arm and the stage 6-10 spool stage 8 disk was necessary for higher thrust applications. Also, there were other locations that were limited in LCF capability due to high stress. The current stage 6-10 spool aft flange had not been evaluated for design simplification.
(4)Improvement:
Materials with better thermal growth properties are used in additional areas in both of the spools. For the stage 3-4 spool, the material of the spacer arm between the stage 3 and stage 4 disks is changed from Ti 17 to Ti 6242. For the stage 6-10 spool, the stage 8 disk material is changed from Inco 718 to Rene 88. LCF capability is improved by geometry changes in features of both spools. For the stage 3-4 spool, the aft seal teeth have a larger base radius to reduce the stress at these locations. For the stage 6-10 spool, the stage 7 bore hook interface geometry with the stage 7 bore is changed to reduce stresses at this location. The aft flange scallop was removed to simplify the manufacturing process.

Substantiation is by analysis and comparative analysis.

This Service Bulletin has been reviewed by the FAA and the repair(s) and modification(s) herein comply with the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and are FAA APPROVED for installation in the model(s) listed in this Service Bulletin.

A.General
