REVISION 2 TO SERVICE BULLETIN 72-0402
Revision 2 is issued to update paragraph 1., PLANNING INFORMATION.
Revision 1 was issued March 28, 2018. The original was issued February 20, 2018. Revision bars in the left margin identify changes.
1.PLANNING INFORMATION
A.Effectivity
* * * FOR GEnx-1B64/P2, -1B67/P2, -1B70/75/P2, -1B70/P2, -1B70C/P2, -1B74/75/P2, -1B76A/P2
This Service Bulletin is applicable to these GEnx-1B engines:
All GEnx-1B/P2 engines with the wire seal P/N 2454M03P01 installed.
This Service Bulletin has been introduced in production to these GEnx-1B engines:
GEnx-1B engines, serial numbers 958-079, 958-080, 958-088, 958-089, 958-091 through 958-094, 958-098, 958-099, and 958-103 and up.
These serial numbers are the best available data.
The high pressure compressor (HPC) rotor assembly P/N 2305M51G08 and wire seal P/N 2454M03P01 are affected by this Service Bulletin.
B.Description
This Service Bulletin provides instructions to remove the affected wire seals from the forward and aft wire seal grooves of the stages 6-10 compressor rotor spool (stages 6-10 spool) on the GEnx-1B/P2 engines.
C.Compliance
Category 4
GE recommends that you do this Service Bulletin when the stages 6-10 spool is exposed.
Impact E
This recommendation is to improve the cost of ownership, reduce maintenance requirements or is a product improvement.
NOTE:
This Service Bulletin can be done in shop.
This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability or performance of your GE product, or to help prevent the occurrence of the event or condition described in this Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate in the bulletin, that decision will be taken into consideration by GE in evaluating future product performance issues that may arise in the operators fleet.
D.Concurrent Requirements
None.
E.Reason
(1)Objective:
To reduce cost of ownership.
(2)Condition:
The stages 6-10 spool uses wire seals between the blades and the spool rail. During operation, the wire seals can cause wear on the stages 6-10 spool. The wire seals can also wear and thus provide a minimal air sealing.
(3)Cause:
The current wire seals can move within the wire seal grooves of the stages 6-10 spool. The movement causes wear to both the wire seal and wire seal groove.
(4)Improvement:
The proposed design eliminates the use of wire seals in the grooves on the stages 6-10 spool. The wire seals are a source of wear which can result in an unserviceable condition of the stages 6-10 spool. Elimination of the wire seals also eliminates the source of the wear and thus improves the cost of ownership.
(5)Substantiation:
Substantiation is by analysis.
F.Approval
The data contained in this Service Bulletin has been reviewed by the FAA or authorized entity representing the FAA and the repair(s) and modification(s) herein comply with the applicable Aviation Regulations and are APPROVED for installation in the model(s) listed in this Service Bulletin.
G.Manpower
No additional man-hours are required to comply with this Service Bulletin.
H.Weight and Balance
The complete compliance with this Service Bulletin decreases weight by 0.5 lb (0.2 kg).

K.Interchangeability
Qualified interchangeability - Parts deleted.
For production, remove all the wire seals.
For field, it is acceptable to remove the wire seals from a single stage or a few stages of the stage 6 through stage 10 spool, if the workscope does not allow for removal of the wire seals from all the stages. Both sets of the wire seals (forward and aft) must be removed from an individual stage. The remaining wire seals must be removed on the next opportunity, when the wire seals are exposed.
