1.PLANNING INFORMATION
A.Effectivity
* * * FOR GEnx-1B54, -1B58, -1B64, -1B67, -1B70
This Service Bulletin has been introduced in production to these GEnx-1B engines:
GEnx-1B engines, serial numbers 956-145 and up.
These serial numbers are the best available data.
B.Description
This Service Bulletin provides a new hardware and releases an improved system of brackets that support the fuel cooled oil cooler (FCOC) on the GEnx-1B engine.
C.Compliance
Category 7
GE recommends that you do this Service Bulletin at customer's convenience.
NOTE:
This Service Bulletin can be accomplished in shop.
D.Concurrent Requirements
None.
E.Reason
(1)Objective:
To introduce new parts, improve maintainability, and reduce weight.
(2)Condition:
The current type design FCOC support brackets are heavy and overly designed. In addition, the current brackets are difficult to assemble and disassemble on the engine and can lead to damaged hardware.
(3)Cause:
The current bracket design was generated prior to the collection of engine data. The measured system response on unbalanced engines has provided the insight to generate an optimized design.
(4)Improvement:
The redesigned brackets perform equal to or better than the current bracket system.
(5)Substantiation:
Substantiation is by analysis and comparative analysis.
F.Approval
This Service Bulletin has been reviewed by the FAA and the repair(s) and modification(s) herein comply with the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and are FAA APPROVED for installation in the model(s) listed in this Service Bulletin.
G.Manpower
After you get access to the VSFG heat exchanger, you will need approximately 5.0 man-hours for each engine or component.
H.Weight and Balance
The complete compliance with this Service Bulletin decreases weight by 1.9 lb (0.86 kg).

(1)Removal instructions for the FCOC hardware have not changed. Refer to the GEnx-1B EM, 72-00-02, DISASSEMBLY 002, DISASSEMBLY 003, and 72-30-00, DISASSEMBLY 001.
B.Installation of New FCOC Hardware
(1)Attach the support bracket (1, Figure 1, Sheet 6) on the forward flange of the extension case (10-080, 72-30-00) as follows:
(a)Apply a thin layer of C02-058 lubricant to the threads and pressure faces of six machine bolts (2) and six self-locking nuts (05-011).
(b)Attach the support bracket (1), nutplates aft, with the six machine bolts (2), boltheads aft, and self-locking nuts (05-011) on the aft face of the extension case forward flange at boltholes No. 94 thru No. 99. Hand-tighten the self-locking nuts (05-011).
(c)Torque the self-locking nuts (05-011) or machine bolts (2) to 368-432 lb in. (41.6-48.8 Nm) in a criss-cross pattern.
(d)Torque the self-locking nuts (05-011) or machine bolts (2) again to 368-432 lb in. (41.6-48.8 Nm) in a circular pattern.
(2)Attach the support bracket (3, Sheet 7) on the forward flange of the extension case (10-080) as follows:
(a)Apply a thin layer of C02-058 lubricant to the threads and pressure faces of five machine bolts (4).
(b)Attach the support bracket (3) with the five machine bolts (4), bolthead aft, on the aft face of the extension case forward flange at boltholes No. 84 thru 88. Hand-tighten the machine bolts (4).
(c)Torque the five machine bolts (4) to 276-324 lb in. (31.2-36.6 Nm).
(d)Torque the five machine bolts (4) again to 368-432 lb in. (41.6-48.8 Nm).
(3)Attach the FCOC bracket (5, Sheet 6) to the extension case (10-080) as follows:
(a)Apply C02-058 lubricant to the mating surfaces and threads on two machine bolts (6).
(b)Attach the FCOC bracket (5) with two machine bolts (6), bolthead forward, and two self-locking nuts (33-080) on the forward face of the extension case aft flange at boltholes No. 101 and 102. Hand-tighten the self-locking nuts (33-080).
(c)Torque the two self-locking nuts (33-080) to 368-432 lb in. (41.6-48.8 Nm).
(d)Torque the two self-locking nuts (33-080) again to 368-432 lb in. (41.6-48.8 Nm).
(4)Attach the FCOC modification bracket (7, Sheet 7) to the extension case (10-080) aft flange as follows:
(a)Apply C02-058 lubricant to the mating surfaces and threads on four machine bolts (8).
(b)Attach the FCOC modification bracket (7) with four machine bolts (8), bolthead aft, and four self-locking nuts (33-080) on the forward face of the extension case aft flange at boltholes No. 91 thru 94. Hand-tighten the self-locking nuts (33-080).
(c)Torque the four self-locking nuts (33-080) in a criss-cross pattern to 368-432 lb in. (41.6-48.8 Nm).
(d)Torque the four self-locking nuts (33-080) again in a circular pattern to 368-432 lb in. (41.6-48.8 Nm).
(5)Attach the support bracket (9, Sheet 6) on the support bracket (1) that is installed on the extension case (10-080) at the 9:15 o'clock position with a machine bolt (10), a flat wire spring (11), and sliders (12 and 13).
(a)Torque the machine bolt (10) to 106-124 lb in. (12.0-14.0 Nm).
