SPM 70-31-02 ACCEPTABILITY LIMITS FOR FLUORESCENT PENETRANT INSPECTION | ||
TASK 70-31-02-220-003 |
1 . | General. |
This procedure defines acceptance limits for parts subject to fluorescent-penetrant inspection. Acceptable defects for most major components are defined in applicable sections of the repair manual. Where these limits are not defined in the repair manual the following apply. |
2 . | Inspection Classes. |
Subtask 70-31-02-220-031 |
NOTE: |
|
A. | The following classes apply: |
(1) | Class A: Non welded Parts. |
(2) | Class B: Fusion Welded Parts. |
(3) | Class C: Non welded Parts (No Spacing Required). |
(4) | Class D: Fusion Welded Parts (No Spacing Required). |
3 . | Acceptability Limits. |
Subtask 70-31-02-220-032 |
NOTE: |
|
A. | Class A (Non welded Parts). |
(1) | Only the following indications are acceptable, and they should not be closer than 0.50 inch (12.7 mm). |
(a) | All indications less than 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) long. |
(b) | Indications 0.030-0.060 inch (0.76-1.52 mm) long not interpreted as cracks. |
B. | Class B (Fusion Welded Parts). |
(1) | Indications no longer than 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) when viewed under black light shall be allowed if the following conditions are met. |
(a) | The indication is confined to the weld, or to the heat affected zone of the parent metal within 0.090 inch (2.29 mm) of the weld line. See Figure 1. |
(b) | The indication, if it is in the heat affected zone, shall be in a transverse direction to the weld. The spacing between indications shall be no less than 0.50 inch (12.7 mm) for indications occurring in the heat affected zone and no less than 0.250 inch (6.35 mm) for indications occurring in the weld. |
(2) | Only the following indications are acceptable outside heat affected zone, and they shall be no closer than 0.50 inch (12.7 mm). |
(a) | All indications less than 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) long. |
(b) | Indications 0.030-0.060 inch (0.76-1.52 mm) long not interpreted as cracks. |
C. | Class C (Non welded Parts, No Spacing Required). |
(1) | Only the following indications are acceptable. |
(a) | All indications less than 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) long. |
(b) | Indications 0.030-0.060 inch (0.76-1.52 mm) long not interpreted as cracks. |
D. | Class D (Fusion Welded Parts, No Spacing Required). |
(1) | Indication no longer than 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) shall be allowed if the following conditions are met. |
(a) | The indication is confined to the weld, or to the heat affected zone of the parent metal within 0.090 inch (2.29 mm) of the weld line. See Figure 1. |
(b) | The indication, if it is in the heat affected zone shall be in a transverse direction to the weld. |
(2) | Only the following indications are acceptable outside the heat affected zone. |
(a) | All indications less than 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) long. |
(b) | Indications 0.030-0.060 inch (0.76-1.52 mm) long not interpreted as cracks. |
