* * * FOR GEnx-1B64, -1B64/P1, -1B64/P2, -1B67, -1B67/P1, -1B67/P2, -1B70, -1B70/75/P1, -1B70/75/P2, -1B70/P1, -1B70/P2, -1B70C/P1, -1B70C/P2, -1B74/75/P1, -1B74/75/P2 |
This Service Bulletin is applicable to these GEnx-1B engines: |
• |
|
These serial numbers are the best available data. |
The mid fan shafts P/N 2331M20G03, P/N 2332M81G03, and P/N 2332M81G04 are affected by this Service Bulletin. |
B. | Description |
This Service Bulletin provides rework instructions to introduce new mid fan shafts P/N 2440M20G05, P/N 2440M91G05, and alternate P/N 2440M91G06 with new anticorrosion coating on the inner diameter (ID) and aft cone surface with remarking process to segregate the normal low cycle fatigue (LCF) shaft from reduced LCF shaft. |
C. | Compliance |
Category 4 |
GE recommends that you do this Service Bulletin when the mid fan shaft module assembly is exposed, including the quick-turn engines. The mid fan shaft is to be exposed when the low pressure turbine (LPT) module is separated from the engine. |
Impact E |
This recommendation is to improve the cost of ownership, reduce maintenance requirements or is a product improvement. |
NOTE: |
|
This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability or performance of your GE product, or to help prevent the occurrence of the event or condition described in this Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate in the bulletin, that decision will be taken into consideration by GE in evaluating future product performance issues that may arise in the operators fleet. |
D. | Concurrent Requirements |
None. |
|
E. | Reason |
(1) | Objective: |
To improve reliability and maintainability. |
(2) | Condition: |
Heavy corrosion pitting is observed on the mid fan shaft inner surface. |
Normal LCF and reduced LCF life materials are mixed in the field mid fan shafts P/N 2332M81G03 and P/N 2332M81G04. |
(3) | Cause: |
Oil leakage into the mid fan shaft ID has been observed on GEnx-1B engines in the field. The oil leakage causes corrosion pits on the mid fan shaft inner surfaces. |
Reduced LCF values resulted from thin plate-like Aluminum Nitride (ALN) particles caused by high homogenization temperature. |
(4) | Improvement: |
The corrosion resistance of the mid fan shaft ID can be improved with the new anticorrosion coating to decrease the number of mid fan shafts that can need a repair during overhaul. |
The normal LCF and reduced LCF mid fan shafts can be segregated in service by marking them to reduce the number of mid fan shafts that need a repair operation. Both, coating application and segregation action with reidentification are done during the rework process. |
(5) | Substantiation: |
Substantiation is by comparative analysis. |
F. | Approval |
The data contained in this Service Bulletin has been reviewed by the appropriate governmental authority and the repair(s) and modification(s) herein comply with the applicable Aviation Regulations and are APPROVED for installation in the model(s) listed in this Service Bulletin. |
G. | Manpower |
No additional man-hours are required to comply with this Service Bulletin. |
H. | Weight and Balance |
Weight and balance are not changed. |

K. | Interchangeability |
The reworked mid fan shaft is fully interchangeable with the old mid fan shaft. After rework, the part number and life limit of the mid fan shaft will change. Refer to the GEnx-1B EM, Chapter 05 for mid fan shafts P/N 2440M20G05 and P/N 2440M91G05 or alternate P/N 2440M91G06 life limits. |
