TASK 70-23-02-110-019
1 . General.
A.The following method provides an effective way of removing inorganic bonded aluminum paint to permit subsequent inspection or refinishing. If it is necessary to strip inorganic bonded aluminum paint from a part, use the following procedure.
NOTE:
Unless specified differently, Subtask 70-21-06-110-535, Ultrasonic Agitation of the Solution(s), can be used as an alternative to TASK 70-23-02-110-019, Stripping Method No.2 Stripping Inorganic Bonded Aluminum Paint, if the self-substantiation requirements of the task are met.
NOTE:
Because paint residue forms a sludge that reduces the effectiveness of the solution, facilities used for paint stripping should be different from those used for general cleaning.
2 . Materials.
Subtask 70-23-02-110-191
A.Refer to the consumable listing in TASK 70-21-06-110-004, Cleaning Method No. 6 - Heavy-Duty Alkaline Cleaner (Without Inhibited Phosphoric Acid).
3 . Procedure.
Subtask 70-23-02-110-192
A.Use the following procedure in conjunction with the materials mentioned.
(1)Vapor degrease part as directed in TASK 70-21-02-110-002, Cleaning Method No. 2 - Vapor Degreasing, or steam clean.
WARNING:
INORGANIC BONDED ALUMINUM PAINT CONTAINS ALUMINUM PARTICLES IN THE 5 TO 10 MICRON RANGE, WHICH REACT LIKE PURE ALUMINUM POWDER IN THE DRY STATE, FORMING EXPLOSIVE MIXTURES WHEN DISPERSED IN AIR. INORGANIC BONDED ALUMINUM PAINT ALSO REACTS WITH ALKALINE SOLUTIONS AND MANY ACIDS TO LIBERATE HYDROGEN, WHICH FORMS EXPLOSIVE MIXTURES WITH AIR. BE SURE THAT CLEANING TANKS ARE THOROUGHLY VENTILATED BY A FORCED-AIR EXHAUST SYSTEM WHEN PROCESSING INORGANIC BONDED ALUMINUM PAINT-COATED PARTS.
(2)Immerse part for 15-60 minutes in alkaline solution.
(3)Rinse by immersion in clear water at 140-180°F(60-82°C) for five minutes.
(4)Pressure-rinse, using steam or an air-water spray at 140°F (60°C) minimum.
(5)Blow dry with clean, dry shop air.
(6)Apply preservative as required.
4 . Control of Solution.
Subtask 70-23-02-110-193
CAUTION:
BE SURE TO CHECK ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS BEFORE DISCARDING SOLUTIONS.
A.Maintain water level. When stripping time exceeds 60 minutes, discard the solution.
